Ka pū te ruha, ka hao te rangatahi
It all begins with dream. That dream becomes a vision. Maybe you want to launch a kaupapa, or maybe you want to turn a skill into something more. You might have a community project for your hāpori, marae or Iwi. Whatever it is, we’re here to help you turn your vision into a plan, and that plan into a reality.
The whakapapa of Tū Rangatahi
The Tū Rangatahi Youth Foundation was founded in January 2019. Since then, Tu Rangatahi has delivered over a dozen leadership programmes to kura throughout Waikato and Waiariki, reaching over 400 tauira Māori. In June 2023, the Tu Rangatahi Youth Foundation became part of Te Puna Ariki Charitable Trust. The Foundation and its programmes now form part of trusts identity.
What does Tū Rangatahi look like today?
Tu Rangatahi has been re-designed into an innovative programme that champions a unique perspective on leadership. The programme has become marae based and emphasises the importance of ‘tea towel’ leadership, the kind that arises from your experiences behind the scenes on the marae.
This programme is designed to:
Develop the practical leadership abilities of rangatahi through roles such as catering, dishwashing, and marae maintenance.
Highlight the value of humility and service, showcasing how leadership is demonstrated through action and support.
Equip rangatahi with the skills to overcome obstacles, navigate complex situations, and support collective goals.
Foster confidence and self-belief by celebrating the significance of essential contributions often made in the background.
Outcomes:
Through Tū Rangatahi, tauira learn that true leadership is not just about standing in the front but about uplifting others and ensuring the kaupapa runs smoothly from behind the scenes. It also looks to sharpen and polish the skills of life that are intrinsic to this style of leadership.
As many marae look to focus on building and empowering the next generation of kaikōrero and kaikaranga, Te Puna Ariki looks to compliment this important work by building and reinforcing the engine rooms of the marae.
